Introducing this blog

Talk, and talking, should be the cornerstone of academic life. But too often the conversations that do take place occur on the terms and conditions of the most powerful. Those ‘most powerful’ are generally white, male, straight, middle class men, whose assumptive worlds it is often necessary for outsiders ( women, ethnic and sexual minorities ) to reproduce if they wish to progress in the academy.

We hope that this blog will provide a space for exchanges between those who differ and/or dissent from this homogeneous world and in particular those who not see the university as solely the training ground for the market economy or the automatic preserve of the most privileged. The global neo-liberal academy is energetic in its policing of its inmates : here we wish to redress that one-sided relationship by a different type of policing, one that recognises differences of politics, gender, sexuality, class and race.

Please send us your items of news: about those you would like to caution, charge or convict. We have no wish to extend the boundaries of the penal system but we do hold to the view that ‘crime’ has many definitions.
